My favorite story I have yet been told.
A (male) student: "I wanted to get my ears pierced but my mom said no. Actually, my dad said, 'No, because one ear means gay, two ears means bisexual.' But then two months later he got both of his ears pierced, so..."

Subject:mix tape of my sister's life
Time:02:57 pm
I am trying to put together landmark songs from different parts of my sister's life as a birthday/graduation/welcome to adult life present. I've been trying really hard to make it more of a list of songs that really define certain ages and events rather than songs that encapsulate the 90s or whatever. Just posting what I've got so far so I can access it at home.

I don't know how widespread this is in middle schools, but I just learned today that the schools in my district don't have Social Studies classes anymore. Geography, world history, etc. -- that stuff isn't on the standardized tests so they just stopped having the class. Other subjects will try and shoehorn social studies subjects into their lesson plans: Language Arts will do something on biographies or historical fiction, I guess they fit geography into math somehow? I don't know. Just in case you didn't know how absolutely fucked up the American education system is, there you go. They don't teach kids history or geography anymore. Because you know, Americans are already revered around the world for our geography skills.

Subject:Young adult manga series?
Time:01:57 pm
So I have been placed in charge of finding out what to spend $2600 of leftover library budget on. I have deputized some cool kids to make request lists but I figured I could deputize the internet, too. What manga series are appropriate for 5th-8th grade? (about 9-13 years old) I'd say Dragonball Z stuff is the most violent it should get, and no sex stuff should be in there at all. Or boobs. (Yes I know this is a dumb American double-standard but I work for the man.) Same goes for books really, although a lot more adult stuff can go in books because there aren't actual pictures of boobs, etc. Bonus points if I can sneak social issues in under the radar, though. (One time there was a kid behind the desk with me and I was reading the news on my computer and there was an article about gay marriage and he said, "Why do people care about gay people getting married?" And I thought, hey! You're right, they shouldn't care. How astute of you, sixth-grader. But then he followed it up with, "I mean, it's not like I like gay people, but.." Oh.)

Found out the firewall at work doesn't block TVTropes OR Cracked so my downtime is going to be occupied for a while.

Overheard in the library: "Hey! Don't call me boy! I'm a kid! A boy is older."

Also, I was doing inventory today and for some reason almost all the Dr. Seuss books had been moved to the section of books about drugs. I thought that was funny.

One of the (male) fifth graders accidentally (as far as I can tell) ordered a a gay romance manga, hahaha. There was nothing terribly explicit in it but there was some heavy petting so I had to send it back. The kids have very little idea how to order books, they usually just put in a keyword and order the first things on the list. Like one fifth grader searched for dogs and has ended up with an educational picture book called All About Dogs! as well as Soldier Dogs, a non-fiction novel documenting dogs in the military.

I need to write down more of the ridiculous stuff that happens here sometimes.

ETA: I just herded a starling out a window while a group of sixth graders watched and called advice from the other side of the library. How did it get in here? It is a great mystery. They thought it was funny that I was the one dealing with the bird, since I go by Miss Cat (going by my last name seemed weird). So it was Cat vs. Bird. Haha.

I got a job at a middle school library and for whatever reason, the only websites that I frequent that the firewall here at work doesn't block are my e-mail and Livejournal. I have a lot of downtime so I am reading through the 100 Most Interesting Wikipedia Articles and listening to audiobooks. I'm listening to the A Wrinkle in Time right now, yesterday was Island of the Blue Dolphins. The library is empty because all the kids are doing some kind of Valentine's thing in the cafeteria. They're playing Gangnam Style very loudly. The clerk they had before had to retire because of early onset Alzheimer's, which is sad, but she'd been here a long time and they'd all learned to fix her mistakes and deal with the speed she was able to do things, so the expectations for me are really low. So anyway, this job is very easy and sometimes fun but there is in fact a lot of downtime in which I have to entertain myself without appearing to be not doing anything. So I am typing this and oh here comes a big pile of books to check in, toodle-oo.

Subject:ArtMo Week 1
Time:03:23 am
So I'm finally using my tumblr kind of as an art blog insofar as I am actually producing small amounts of art things now and I can post them on my tumblr. Trying to reboot my motivation to draw so I took on an "ArtMo" challenge which is basically just post an art everyday for the month of December. I don't feel like I'm following the rules exactly but whatever. Anything that makes me feel motivated to draw something is good.

First seven daysCollapse )

I've already skipped one day out of laziness. Let's see how many more days I can actually complete.
